I used a milage reward ticket to Paris for Thanksgiving and had a 5 hour layover in Amsterdam. When factoring out the train ride to the city I had a little less than 3 hours in the city but enough to whet my appetite. Somehow in all my travels I had never been there and now I can’t wait to plan a real trip back. Take these for what they are worth, a few tourist hours in a new city.

For thanksgiving my wife, son and I took off for Paris for a short week and a chance to get away. While Paris is full of amazing restaurants and not so amazing restaurants(Frenchie comes to mind, come on Anthony Bourdain, really?)

We choose out favorite neighborhood restaurant to celebrate thanksgiving and for about the 10th time it exceded my expectations. I know what I’m going to order before I walk in the door(cassoulet, frog legs) and it’s always better than I remember.

Hot air ballooning seems so iconic to me and Iv’e always wanted to experience it. Getting to try it in Luxor Egypt made it even better. Other than having to wake up at 5 in the morning the entire process of watching the workers set up the balloons for take off is quite surreal! All the hustle and bustle is very exciting and then you jump and/or climb in the big wicker basket and the jets are bursting hot air and your adrenaline is pumping and then its just peace! As soon as your 50 feet off the ground its quite and your amazed at the view of the Nile river and ruins all around you.

HAGIA SOPHIA

Recommending Hagia Soghia in Istanbul is like recommending the Louvre in Paris but it as absolutely a must see. It was built as a christian church, converted in to a mosque and is now a museum.

I have an absolute obsession with fish markets. If a city has one I will be there before sunrise to see what’s going on. Istanbul was no exception and I ended up here 3 days in a row.

If you have ever parked a boat before you will understand how amazing the captains are in Istanbul.

Again, low lying fruit as far as exotic goes but the smells, chaos, variety and quality of food is not to be missed. It is surprisingly hard to find as it is not well labeled or as large looking from the outside as one would expect.

The area surrounding both side of the Galata Bridge is one of the most amazing people watching places I have ever encounted. On the south side you have the mosques, markets and bazaars and across the Bosphorus you have Galata Tower in a neighborhood much like the East Village of New York. As well, an amazing little street of nothing but hardware stores.

MOSQUES

There are so many Mosques in Istanbul it’s hard to pick one. All seemed to be very open to westerners visiting but please check up on local customs before entering to save you and them embarrassment(no shorts, etc).

After being totally blown away by their work and studio space I jokingly asked if he ever gave workshops and he offered to have a weekend workshop for just me and my assistant Pat. I took him up on the idea and needed to print opening pages for my new portfolio so the timing was perfect.

Peter has an amazing collection of antique type. I could go through it for days.

Inks of every shade and type known to man.

SPOILER ALERT! I little preview of the plate used to make the opening page of my new portfolio.

Pat printing his cards on the second day.

Peter showing me how to tie metal type together to save it for reprinting if necessary.

It felt so good to get in the studio and do something entirely by hand. Thanks to Peter for an amazing experience.

5 THINGS-SHANGHAI

Crazy expensive drinks and an insane elevator ride are forgotten the minute you set down and realize this is your view. Absolutely worth it

STAMPEDE GO KARTING

One of the most fun nights I have ever had in my life happened here. Nearly impossible to find(in the basement of a closed mall) is the largest go cart track in Asia and a ……BAR! Thats right, legalized drinking and driving and the cars are seriously fast. I can’t recommend this place enough.

DAVE’S TAILORING

I was always a little leery of having shirts and suits made in China but after having Dave’s place recommended highly by Radical Media’s own Rob Spitzer I decided to give it a try. My only regret is only having 8 shirts made. The quality is every bit as good as a Thomas Pink or similar at about one third the cost. As well you can do slight custom alterations to make it your own. I recommend taking a shirt you like and having them copy the cut though. They primarily deal with business people who may not like the same cut and silhouette that you like. They can do anything, just be really clear on what you want.

This was taken right next to the People’s Heroes Memorial on the bund at sunrise. Get up at sunrise and take a walk along this riverside park when you will be the only one there.

I blogged about this before on the old site but I can’t stress enough how surreal this is. The Bund Tourist Tunnel is a 5 minute ride that goes under the Huangpu River and connects Pudong and the Bund.

Stumbling around Seminyak in the rain a came across a wholesaler of metal sculptures. I took a few quick scout pictures planning to come back and shoot it the next day. The next day happened to be Sunday and they were closed. So disappointed as the place was amazing. No idea of the name but it’s just a block south of the Bintang shopping center and across the street.

Cheese is one of the things I most crave in France. This time out I researched and found a little shop in the Rive Gauche that did not disappoint. Androuet is an amazing place to stop and grab a few varieties of cheese, a bottle of wine and go across the street for fresh baguettes. Then off to Jardin Luxembourg or the Tulleries for a picnic.

BRASSERIE LIPP

Despite the fact Terry Richardson goes on and on about this place, I still think it’s awesome. One of the oldest and most talked about places in Paris, it makes a great bearnaise sauce and the shrimp salad shown below could not have been better.

One of the most overlooked art places in Paris is the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in the St Germain area. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to be 19 and going to school here. Makes me want to go back and do it all over again.

My 4 year old raves about this place and we go almost every day we are in Paris. Two years ago Deyrolle burned almost to the ground but they have recovered nicely. Just remember, no pictures!
